Blue striped linen fabric
Woven Textile
This rectangular swatch of fabric with a blue breton stripe pattern on white ground is a plain woven linen. The pattern was printed rather than woven, as seen by the limited bleed on the piece's reverse side. There are several slubs noticeable throughout. The piece is cut selvedge-to-selvedge, a width of about 36in.

Cataloging Note
The piece shows evidence of having been sewn and unpicked at some point. There are several loose threads running perpendicular to the selvedge. Approximately 3/8in. of the edges of both selvedges and one weft edge of the fabric have been folded in and pressed on the "wrong" side of the fabric to create a finished edge, at which there are also several threads that have been unpicked. It is possible this piece was intended to be an all-purpose dishcloth or cleaning rag before being harvested to repurpose into something else, though evidence of its use is too limited to be conclusive.
