ICIODI
Instituto Cubano de Investigación y Orientación de la Demanda Interna · Cuban Institute for Research and Orientation of Internal Demand
The Instituto Cubano de Investigación y Orientación de la Demanda Interna (ICIODI) was the Cuban state institution created to research, analyze, and guide domestic consumer demand. Operating within the framework of a centrally planned economy, ICIODI studied what Cuban citizens needed and wanted, from clothing and household goods to food and appliances, and produced reports, bulletins, and guidelines that shaped state production and distribution decisions. Its publications are primary sources for understanding how the socialist state imagined, managed, and attempted to satisfy the material needs of Cuban society.
El Instituto Cubano de Investigación y Orientación de la Demanda Interna (ICIODI) fue la institución estatal cubana creada para investigar, analizar y orientar la demanda. Operando dentro del marco de una economía centralmente planificada, el ICIODI estudiaba qué necesitaban y deseaban los ciudadanos cubanos, desde ropa y artículos del hogar hasta alimentos y electrodomésticos, y producía informes, boletines y directrices que orientaban las decisiones estatales de producción y distribución. Sus publicaciones son fuentes primarias imprescindibles para comprender cómo el estado cubano socialista imaginaba, gestionaba e intentaba satisfacer las necesidades materiales de la sociedad.

Military Units to Help with Production · Unidades Militares de Ayuda a la Producción
The Unidades Militares de Ayuda a la Producción (UMAP) were forced labor camps established by the Cuban government between 1965 and 1968, used to detain individuals deemed ideologically undesirable: gay men, religious believers, artists, and intellectuals. Detainees performed compulsory agricultural labor under military discipline. The camps were dissolved in 1968 following domestic and international criticism.
Las Unidades Militares de Ayuda a la Producción (UMAP) fueron campos de trabajo forzado establecidos por el gobierno cubano entre 1965 y 1968, utilizados para recluir a personas consideradas ideológicamente indeseables: hombres gay, Testigos de Jehová, artistas e intelectuales contestatarios. Los internos realizaban trabajo agrícola obligatorio bajo disciplina militar. Los campos fueron disueltos en 1968 tras críticas internas e internacionales.
