The booklet is a teacher's methodological guide (How to Work with Pictures) for using the picture-based teaching aid In Aid of the Schoolchild; the numbered balloons on the cover signal early-grade number/vocabulary content taught through images. Its publisher, "Русский язык," specialized in teaching aids for Russian as a foreign language, including manuals on RFL teaching methods, and pioneered books for children of compatriots abroad. During the Soviet–Cuban alliance, Russian was widely taught in Cuba, and Soviet RFL materials (from Russkiy Yazyk and Progreso) were distributed there.
