Pair of Women's Brown Leather Ankle-Strap Peep-Toe High-Heeled Sandals (Joya), with Box

Clothing/Dress/Costume

A pair of women's brown leather dress sandals: peep-toe with a single wide vamp strap, an ankle strap fastened by a small metal buckle, and a curved, set-back high heel. The uppers are smooth tan-brown leather; the sock is leather-lined and bears the cursive maker's stamp "Joya"; the sole is leather. Both shoes are present. Accompanying them is a two-piece buff cardboard shoe box rubber-stamped on the end "CARMELTA" with the codes "614," "22/8," and "260," plus a faint stamp on the lid edge. The brown ("carmelita") color stamp matches the shoes, indicating this is their box.

Used and stored in their box by Gertrudis Caraballo Gálvez.

"Carmelita" is the Cuban-Spanish word for brown; here it is a color specification stamped on a plain cardboard shoe box of the kind used by Cuban shoe retailers and factories. The peep-toe ankle-strap sandal with a curved heel is a late-1940s–1950s style.
