Playa Girón stamp sheet, Series 4.
Imprenta Nacional de Cuba / Comisión Playa Girón, Cuba.
An uncut sheet of 25 Cuban postage stamps, 1 centavo each, from Series 4 of the Playa Girón commemorative issue. Each stamp depicts Fidel Castro with the slogan “Los pueblos no temen a la muerte, sino al yugo” running vertically along the left margin: Peoples do not fear death, only the yoke. Below the figure: “Playa Girón / Cuba Democrática y Socialista”. The sheet margins read “Imprenta Nacional de Cuba” on the left and “Comisión Playa Girón” on the right.
Playa Girón, known in the United States as the Bay of Pigs, was the site of the April 1961 CIA-backed invasion by Cuban exiles seeking to overthrow Castro, defeated by Cuban forces. The victory was immediately proclaimed as the first defeat of imperialism in Latin America and became one of the cuba regime’s most celebrated moments.
